Alone
I saw them take the Jews
My strangers, my neighbours, my friends,
But I did not fight,
I did not speak out.
I saw them tease the boys,
Who held hands and kissed in the park,
But I did not fight,
I did not speak out.
I saw them hit the girl,
Bruising her warm, dark skin,
But I did not fight,
I did not speak out.
I saw them all,
Peered into their eyes as they cried for help,
But I did not speak out,
And now I wither away in silence,
Alone.
